Antonin Dvorak will be our featured composer for this summer's festival. However, we decided to include a few works from his fellow country-men, hence the name "Czech-mates." Dvorak has a wealth of beautiful chamber works but I not only wanted to vary the program a bit more but also have the opportunity to share with you some less known but equally moving works. We have included works by Josef Suk, a student of Dvorak's and a quartet by the unique Leos Janacek. These are the works which will be performed on Denman Island(and highlights of each work in Courtenay/Comox):
Trio "Dumky" for violin, cello, and piano by Dvorak
Quintet for piano and strings by Dvorak
Hopefully the Quintet for Two Violas "American" by Dvorak
Possibly the Bass Quintet by Dvorak
String Quartet "Kreutzer Sonata" by Janacek
Piano Quartet opus 1 by Josef Suk (dedicated to Dvorak!)
